HIV/AIDS has had a devastating effect globally. In 2007, there are more than 38 million people living with HIV worldwide, with about 4 million new infections each year. The number of deaths due to AIDS in 2006 was over 3 million. In Australia there are more than 16,000 people living with HIV, with about 800 new infections each year.
Treatments have advanced significantly in recent years, but there is still more work to do and there are still many people living with HIV/AIDS who need care and support.
