ACON (formerly the AIDS Council of NSW) is inviting people across NSW to participate in a range of events to mark this year’s World AIDS Day (Thu 1 Dec).
ACON CEO Nicolas Parhkill says a variety of fundraising, awareness-raising and memorial events will feature as part of ACON’s World AIDS Day activities.
“World AIDS Day provides us valuable opportunity to educate people about HIV/AIDS as well as raise money to prevent HIV transmission and help people with HIV.
“So I encourage everyone to support our efforts this year by making a donation to the Red Ribbon Appeal, buying Red Ribbon merchandise or attending one of our fundraising or remembrance events.”
The following World AIDS Day events are being supported by ACON:
On World AIDS Day and the day after, volunteers will be selling red ribbons ($2) and red wristbands ($4) at selected locations throughout Sydney. And in the lead-up to World AIDS Day, Red Ribbon merchandise can be purchased from businesses displaying Red Ribbon boxes or donations can be made via the official Red Ribbon Appeal web site: www.redribbonday.org.au
ACON benefit night at Stonewall Hotel on Oxford St, Darlinghurst. $5 donation at the door. Shows all night by Sydney’s leading drag performers.
ACON benefit night at Arq nightclub on Flinders St, Darlinghurst. $10 donation at the door. Lots of shows with DJ's on both levels.
Red Ribbon merchandise will be available at ACON’s office at 47 Kenny St, Wollongong and at selected businesses throughout the Illawarra in the lead-up to World AIDS Day, including the Coldale Markets. Then on Wed 1 Dec, volunteers will be selling Red Ribbon merchandise at the Crown St Mall in Wollongong (10am-2pm). Donations can also be made online at www.redribbonday.org.au
Come and meet ACON staff and volunteers and get a first hand experience of the important work they do in the community. Afternoon tea will be served.
A memorial service will be held to commemorate those who have died of HIV/AIDS in the Illawarra. The event will include a picnic, candle lighting, and releasing red origami cranes to commemorate those we are remembering.
The Breakwater Lighthouse will be lit red to mark World AIDS Day and ACON staff and volunteers will be running a stall at this popular monthly event. Includes entertainment, displays and information about HIV/AIDS.
Cabared is a red ribbon cabaret fundraising event for ACON’s Southern Region. Nero von Fassbinder will host a mixture of drag and cabaret at the Phoenix Theatre on Bridge St in Coniston from 7:30pm. Bookings essential at bookings@phoenixtheatre.net.au
Red Ribbon merchandise will be available at ACON’s Northern Rivers office at 27 Uralba St, Lismore and at selected businesses throughout the Northern Rivers in the lead-up to and on World AIDS Day. Then on Thursday 1 December, volunteers will be selling Red Ribbon merchandise in the Lismore and Byron Bay CBDs. Please contact us if you would like to be a Red Ribbon seller on the day. Free workshop for people with HIV. The workshop will include the latest information about HIV, how to reduce the complications of HIV, and hints and tips to stay well and healthy. The Civic Park Fountain, Newcastle City Hall Clock Tower, and The Obelisk will be lit up red to mark WAD.
The white kites with red ribbons that were made during the recent Rainbow Festival will get to spread their wings during this unique awareness-raising event.
All nine Newcastle Libraries will feature displays and resources about HIV and AIDS. The Hunter AIDS memorial quilts will also be on display at John Hunter Hospital and Cessnock Library.
Free public gathering in the community garden in Carrington near the Cowper Street bridge to commemorate those who have died of HIV/AIDS in the Hunter. A new pergola will be dedicated and lanterns will be released into the Hunter River. Light refreshments will be served.
Get the latest info about preventing and treating HIV/AIDS from staff at the John Hunter Hospital and the Aboriginal Medical Service at Hamilton South. The HIV Unit at John Hunter Hospital will also be hosting a lunch to commemorate 25 years of service to people with HIV and their families, friends and carers.
This is a fundraiser for Karumah Positive Living Centre. Karumah provides health promotion services and activities for people with HIV, their families, partners and other carers.
In the lead-up to World AIDS Day, Red Ribbon merchandise will be available at ACON’s offices at Shop 3 146 -150 Gordon St Port Macquarie and 9 Boambee St, Coffs Harbour as well as selected businesses in Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour. Then on Thurs 1 Dec, volunteers will be selling ribbons in Toormina Centro Shopping Centre between 9am – 3pm. Donations can also be made online at www.redribbonday.org.au
The cast and crew of RENT have put their support behind ACON during AIDS Awareness Week. People will be able to make donations following a number of their performances during the final week of their show at the Jetty Theatre.
